Newborn Dies After 'Disruptive' Boy, 6, Roams Hospital Unattended and Drops Her on Head
A criminal investigation is underway to determine how the boy gained access to the neonatal unit, a restricted area requiring stringent oversight.

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Jeanne-de-Flandre Children's Hospital in Lille, France, where a premature newborn, Zayneb-Cassandra, died on 15 July 2025 after a six-year-old boy, left unsupervised, dropped her on the floor.
The incident has sparked a criminal investigation and raised serious questions about the boy's disruptive behaviour and the broader implications for hospital safety.
A Preventable Tragedy in the Neonatal Unit
Zayneb-Cassandra, born seven and a half months premature via C-section to a 23-year-old first-time mother, was in the neonatal unit while her mother recovered in the maternity ward.
On 11 July 2025, a six-year-old boy, the son of another patient, entered the unit unsupervised and treated the infant 'like a doll', dropping her and causing a fatal brain injury.
According to Daily Mail, a loud bang was heard when the baby's head hit the floor, and she was found unresponsive beside the boy, who was standing on a chair.
The infant's grandparents told a newspaper 'Nobody was watching this boy, and now our Zayneb-Cassandra is gone.'
A criminal investigation is underway to determine how the boy gained access to the neonatal unit, a restricted area requiring stringent oversight.
Complaints About Disruptive Behaviour Ignored
The boy's unsupervised presence was not an isolated incident. Patients and staff had repeatedly flagged his disruptive behaviour, with mothers complaining he ran through hallways from 7 am daily, entering rooms without permission.
Zayneb-Cassandra's grandparents noted, 'All the mothers were frustrated, and a nurse had warned his mother about his behaviour.' Despite these concerns, no effective action was taken to supervise him.

The hospital's failure to address these complaints has fuelled outrage, with families questioning why a vulnerable neonatal unit was accessible to an unattended child.
Hospital Response and Calls for Accountability
Jeanne-de-Flandre Children's Hospital has launched an internal administrative investigation in conjunction with the criminal probe.
A hospital spokesperson stated, 'This human tragedy has deeply affected our staff and families present.'
The incident has spotlighted broader issues of understaffing and lax security in maternity wards, echoing other recent cases, such as the death of Brendon Staddon at Yeovil District Hospital on 5 March 2024, where oversight failures were also cited.

Public sentiment reflects shock and demands for accountability, with many calling for stricter protocols to protect vulnerable patients.
There is something seriously wrong with that boy.....shocking.

The hospital has pledged to review its policies, but for Zayneb-Cassandra's family, these measures come too late.
The death of Zayneb-Cassandra underscores the devastating consequences of inadequate supervision in hospitals.
A six-year-old's unchecked behaviour led to an unimaginable loss, prompting urgent calls for improved security and staffing in neonatal units.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring such a tragedy never recurs, honouring the memory of a newborn lost too soon.
